In an interview with StartUp City, Christine Brennan, Managing Director, Vertex Ventures HC, shares her thoughts on investments in the biotech space and how to go about finding the ideal technology partners.

As the managing director of Vertex Ventures HC, what are some of the biggest challenges you are currently observing in the biotech startup space?

During the 2020-2021 period, biotech companies faced challenges in quickly securing online financing. The process of raising funds typically took six months or more. Venture capitalists preferred biotech companies with a focus on clinical development. This created a division where early-stage companies with new platforms or technologies, as well as those closer to the clinical stage, had a higher likelihood of receiving funding. Companies that had successfully raised a significant Series A round but were still in the preclinical stage struggled when seeking Series B financing.

What is the approach you take to find the right technology partners?

Amid an abundance of fresh capital, investors are becoming more selective, focusing on capital-efficient ventures with rapid clinical proof of concept. Higher valuations, economic uncertainties, and stricter investment criteria are driving this shift. While finding syndicate partners is not challenging, the key lies in identifying the right partners at the right time. The market experiences a significant influx of deal flow, with numerous companies raising funds, and reliable syndicate partners and venture funds are eager to invest. However, aligning the needs of investors, syndicate partners, and target companies remains a challenge.

What are some of the common misconceptions that arise regarding investment in the biotech startup space?

From an external perspective, there is a common misconception regarding government-funded research leading to fully developed drugs. However, this is rarely the case, as the funding provided by government-funded entities or academic institutions is primarily aimed at advancing the general understanding of basic science and how the human body functions. Such research plays a crucial role in drug development. Many biotech companies are founded based on scientific breakthroughs, but it often takes years, and sometimes even decades, for these discoveries to be fully explored and transformed into viable drugs.

There is also a misconception about the substantial amount of money required to bridge the gap between basic research and the eventual development of a drug. The costs involved in this journey can reach hundreds of millions of dollars when considering both the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors.

Are there any interesting or impactful projects or initiatives that you are currently overseeing, and could you share some information about those?

The ultimate goal of every entity in the medical industry, including venture investors, biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical companies, is to benefit patients. On that note, Vertex Ventures HC places patient needs at the forefront of decision-making processes and actively seeks out solutions that can address patient needs.

Vertex Ventures HC focuses on investing in early-stage biotechnology companies, allocating about two-thirds of its investments to this sector. The remaining third is dedicated to med tech, specifically devices and digital solutions. On the med tech side, it seeks innovative solutions for problems that are not easily resolved through traditional pharmaceutical approaches. This includes exploring robotics, improved surgical techniques, and enhanced implants for procedures such as knee replacements and post-surgery pain management.

How do you see the biotech startup space evolving over the next few years?

Advancements in gene therapy, particularly CRISPR editing, are revolutionizing efforts to correct faulty genes and treat genetic disorders. Intellia Therapeutics' promising late-stage data highlights the potential of gene therapy. In cell therapy, the focus has primarily been on limited patient groups, but the field is progressing towards redirecting a patient's own cells to combat a wider range of diseases. These developments aim to enhance accessibility and cost-effectiveness of therapies. Extensive research and recent clinical data demonstrate the transformative potential of these novel approaches, offering groundbreaking modalities for various medical conditions.

What is the advice you would like to pass on to fellow CXOs and peers in the investment for biotech startups space?

Promising therapies for Alzheimer's disease, and oncological diseases has shown the power of targeted treatments based on genetic mutations. These advancements are now being realized in neuroscience. With vast information and generational artificial intelligence, new opportunities arise for drug discovery and understanding disease pathways. The potential impact of next-generation artificial intelligence is yet to be fully seen.
